New Year Message - A Rebirth
######
Our wonderful Namibian sojourn.
A Huge Transformational Teambuilding experience, in Paradise!
As we sit here, in our Johannesburg office, at our stunning new Namibian kiaat boardroom table, we can see an aerial photo of Oranjemund on the wall.
In the photo, the mist is sneaking in from the Atlantic ocean towards the village, it is already covering the shores of South Africa and Namibia and the huge mouth of the Orange river. Although we can't see them in the photo, we know that the wild Gemsbok stroll through the town and across the golf course, and the pink flamingoes line the Orange river estuary. It is here at certain times of the year that the fishing is excellent.
Somewhere in the town Oom Willie is making another half-length VW Bug! And Eloolos is delivering another wonderful Chicken Liver Peri-Peri pizza. Somewhere else Vainess and her team are delivering a SODEXHO meal.
Within the Oranjemund, the quality of life for all people, in particular for children, is outstanding! Small children roam the streets on their bicycles, and the town is practically crime-free. The absence of any car guards, shows just how safe the village is!
If I were looking for a place to settle and to build a career, I would apply for a position there.
Freedom is something which cannot be bought at any price! Add freedom to an amazing primary school, a wonderful private hospital, stunning sports facilities and a wonderful country!
Beyond the village our clients and friends are working to push back the mighty Atlantic ocean to secure the World's purest gems. In the ocean, ship-based crews are sucking ore-bearing soil from the gullies, to raise the once-Kimberley-based stones to the surface.
The history of this special place and the diamonds that are mined here, stretches back 100 years, when Zacharia Lewala found the first diamond in 1908.
Back to the photo, where we can see the various sports fields in the village, two of which doubled up as training rooms for the wonderfully inclusive Celebrating Humanity Transformational Teambuilding programme - Sida !Nans (Nama/ Damara for Our team).
Forever grateful!
We will always be grateful for the opportunity to work with the people of Namdeb Mining Corporation! They not only supply the most amazing gems to the world, they are an integral part of the economy and the development of Namibia, its people and the Southern African Development region.
How it came about
Our company was, one of three, invited to submit proposals in October 2005. Two companies, one from South Africa and another from Windhoek - Namibia were also invited.
In June 2006, I presented the Celebrating Humanity programme, in Oranjemund. My journey, which included a personal fact-finding mission, took 4 days - all in all - from Durban - South Africa. And each of the companies had only 20 minutes for their presentations!
We were well looked after, by HR Manager - Mellissa Shanjengange's team, in this very self sufficient community. And were delighted to be awarded the contract - a few months later!
Getting the Sida !Nans project going.
A new Training Manager, Pauline Thomas and AGM - Paul Sparks, took over the project and powerfully set us on track to begin an incredible transformational teambuilding program.
After a very successful pilot program it was decided that the program would be facilitated for all 2900 Namdeb team members. The programme kicked off in late June 2007, with 2 teams. A week later our third team began training.
The T&D (Training and Development) team, of Pauline, Oom Henry, Martha Smith and Tanja Smith, kicked into top gear - and with their volunteer representatives from all areas of the mine, delivered teams to the training rooms, day after day!
And in Beautful Luderitz
In Luderitz, Tony Bessinger involved his teams and showed the incredible community side of Namdeb - by filling empty spaces with community and local business people. Tobias Pilatus - happily filled the rooms with Namdeb teams.
Africa's cleanest city.
Towards the end of Sida !Nans - we travelled from Luderitz to the capital of Windhoek. This beautiful city has to be the cleanest, best kept city in Africa! It is stunning! Our team, of Arthie and Sheetal - presented the program to a team from Namdeb's Head office. Thereafter we returned to Luderitz to close out the Elizabeth Bay program.
A first.
This was the first time that a training project of this magnitude was facilitated in Namdeb, or by our team. And when all was said and done it was an incredible success. Over 2250 people had been impacted in Namdeb, as had a large number of contractors and community members.
The delegates came from many different ages, histories, exepriences, qualifications and backgrounds:- mostly Namibian, of many varying backgrounds - Owambo, Caprivian, Herero, Nama, Damara, English, Afrikaans and German. We met Zimbabweans and Zambians and many South Africans - including a Zulu man named Hadebe!
Our teams
The 3 multi-diverse Mthimkhulu International teams of Brian and Amrith Haripersad, Arthie Moore and Sheetal Schneider, Fazal Bhayat and Sonja Wright facilitated the 3 teambuilds every two days. They were backed locally up by Suraj Haripersad and by Sholene Haripersad, in Durban.
Our teams have a unique ability, and commitment, to become a part of the communities, in which they find themsleves. We will fit in anywhere in the world, and make a difference!
Each one could greet in numerous local languages - including Oshiwambo, Oshiherero, Nama, Damara, German and Caprivian! The level and fluency of their spoken Afrikaans also rocketed to new heights!
The team's language skills also included Arabic, Zulu, Xhosa, Urdu, English and Gujerati!
Celebrating Humanity
And by their very nature, Celebrating Humanity programs build respect, accountability, motivation, communication, teamwork, understanding and unity within diverse teams. Where necessary the program is adjusted to work with conflicted teams - through the Values Circle progam - and the transformation is amazing!
One of the foundations of the programme was "Aantu oyeshi lya mwena, kayeshi lya mwena," an Owambo proverb - meaning "people know and help those who speak up, but not those who remain silent." This ensured a far greater participation from all levels of the teams.
This was a critical part of the programme, as much of the workforce had never attended training of this nature. And did they participate!
It was stunning to be a part of this programme and to experience the people of Namibia. The wisdom that we saw shine, from the least literate to the most educated delegate, was a revelation.
More Program Principles.
Some other principles, within the programme are:-
At the level of respect, all people are equal.
We all add to each other.
Life rewards action and not thought.
We all are valuable, bring value and are most happy/ successful when we recognise value in others.
Praise, guidance, understanding and support are the cornerstones to building relationships and teams.
Some areas covered
Areas covered, include the solution seeking, problem sharing, the amazing diversity of people, cultures, communication, languages and personalities.
And the wonder of human knowledge and understanding within an organisation. With respect this can go a very long way!
Feedback
There is an incredible amount of feedback - all positive. We have included some on the left and the words of two supervisors - below.
Please note that English is seldom the first, or even the second languae of the delegates. We have written their words verbatim.
"When I came, I came here as a supervisor, I was supposed to know how to give orders, communicate, but I came here and I learned a lot like VAK (Communication and relationship technique). To see how people act, behavior, after I enjoyed the course, it was beautiful."
"What I learned from this is that I am a dictator and my family is going to benefit a lot because I realized that its important to share information."
And on a cultural note
".. All of us are unique, it was strange for us Damaras to dance to a “Owambo” song and now we have gained love for each other, it is not the same between us anymore."
Celebrating Humanity Programs and Mthimkhulu International
In order to understand a little about us and how we facilitate transformational teambuilding, it may be necessary to visit our projects and info websites and glance through Teambuilding for Diverse Teams.
We firmly believe that we should always do more than we are paid for, and maintained this belief through our actions in Namibia.
Go and visit Namibia!
In order to understand the amazing people and the places that we went to, you would have to travel to Luderitz, Oranjemund and to Windhoek.
We had the good fortune to stay in a hotel in the sea, and watch seals and dolphins from our bedroom window.
We travelled through the south of Namibia and saw many amazing and wonderful sites, including wildlife, the feral horses of Garub watering point, diamond mines of earlier times, beautiful dunes and stunning seas.
We have tasted the oysters of Luderitz, listened and laughed at our stories, as they were told in the unique Nama/ Damara click languages and purchased a beautiful diamond at the Historic Ghost Town of Kolman's Kop!
On our travels, we invested in Namibia by buying our 4 poster king-sized bed, a beautiful desk, a 2.2m high cabinet and our 12 seater boardroom table from Seeheim Furniture at Seeheim hotel.
We have yet to experience the North of Namibia - and we WILL!
Arthie and I sincerely recommend that anbody who can, must make Namibia a destination of choice, at least once in their lifetime! And if you can't - find a way!
Via Namibia! Viva the people of Namibia and Viva Namdeb. (And Viva our teams!)

A Poem sent to the people of Namdeb
Ondapandula uunene, Namdeb! From Mthimkhulu International 22/12/2007
Koree, motshavi, walale po, goeie more, Humela, Morokeni,
Guten morgan, mwa buka, Matisa, Hello, Dumela!
Viva Namdeb! Viva Namibia! Viva Afrika! VIVA!
We have been touched forever,
by the people of Namdeb and Namibia,
By the heart and soul
of this warm and wonderful land.
We still dance to the rhythm of Namibia,
From Tate Kwela, to Nama stap,
To Piki-piki and Oshinima.
Kwasa-kwasa, Zemburuka and volkspele course through our veins.
Our mind’s eye will forever
keep images of Namibia pure,
The sheer beauty of the deserts and savannahs,
are stamped into our souls. The seals and Dolphins of Luderitz
will frolic forever in our memories.
As will the dance of the boats in the bay,
and the hotel “in the sea.”
The seawall and the winter seas,
Are an awesome show of man’s ingenuity,
And the Namdeb team’s courage,
Against the sheer power of Nature!
We will always remember,
The windblown airport,
The mouth of the Orange river,
And the Gemsbok wandering in town.
As we travelled through the South,
We wondered at the savannahs and dunes,
The communal weaver nests,
The tenderised Kudu steaks.
And Sossusvlei’s dunes,
The feral horses of Garub,
Keetman’s Giant’s Playground
And Quiver Tree Forest.
We have experienced the warmth and the love,
and the safety in your streets,
we have lived the Namibian dream
and nothing will ever be the same!
Yes! We have been touched by the people, of Namibia,
And this wonderful land.
We wish you a incredible New Year!
Viva Namdeb and Namibia. Viva! VIVA!
Ondapandula uunene! Baie dankie! Tangi! Thank you!
